GCal Culture and the Death of Spontaneity

Jaya Gautam April 15, 2025
A couple months ago, I ran into a friend of mine at Hillside. I hadn’t seen her in a while, so I proposed dinner plans at some point that week. “I’d love to,” she responded. “But let me check my GCal …” In seconds, her computer was open, and Google Calendar (colloquially referred to as GCal) was pulled up.

Are We Compromising Our Inner Child?

Pat Connell November 5, 2024

Veronica Redlitz May 1, 2023
I have been disenchanted with the exclusive, territorial friend group culture that pervades student life at Boston College. It leads to broken friendships and hurt hearts—both within and outside of the friend groups we create. Let me share my story with you.

The Show Must Go On

Matthew Ablondi April 2, 2023
I felt like I was reminiscing with a departing friend as we all sat around recounting our favorite jokes and picking which episode to watch next, knowing the show would soon exist only in my memories.

The Sophomore Condition

Mary Perez March 19, 2023
People change. That’s a big part of what college is for: self-development and personality exploration. These are the years we decide who we want to be, and more practically, who we are going to be.

Extracting Whimsy from the Mundane: the Manic Pixie Dream Girl’s Guide to Valentine’s Day

Punnya Kalapurakkel February 14, 2023
Although I can wholeheartedly understand the anti-Valentine’s sentiment—my forever valentine is none other than my dear mother—I cannot say that I feel the same. Valentine’s Day has always been my favorite holiday.

Marta Seitz February 18, 2018
"Soon enough, you’ll be tossed into the world as a new graduate with a full time job and rent payments, and you will crave those study days in O’Neill with stacks of case studies to read alongside your goofy best friends from freshman year."
